Vital source books are stored as one of 4 formats, Picturebook, pdfbook, epubbook, and vital book. I know of tools to extract pdfbooks and epubbooks but can't get picture books cracked to extract the book and read without using the slow vital source bookshelf app.

Does anyone have any idea on how to strip the drm of.vbk books? I have tried using a hex editor but did not get anywhere on either removing the DRM, viewing the file system inside (Some are just collections of images as a picture book), or changing the print limit from 2 pages to 3000). Picture books have a bunch of images of the pages (Think like a picture of page 2 as a.jpg or.pdf) while vital books are xml formatted. Each app I have used couldn't read them when I tried to take a peak at how it worked to extract the contents. Thank you, I am setting up a new virtual machine of OS X as when I tried that or another Applescript script it tried to print to my physical printer.
I was hoping to get the original copy as it is easy to run OCR on it or convert from hundreds of.jpg files or pdf's into one searchable one with a few programs. I believe the printed versions are pretty low quality as one book was barely readable after printing, the watermark is very easy to remove though. Edit: If you do use the applescript then you'll need to download a separate print to pdf app as it won't recognize that you can do that by default in OS X. It also got stuck a few times. I've been doing some research on it the past month or two, it is basically a proprietary container for books sold from vitalsource. They get a regular pdf, epub, xml book, or images and wrap them with their DRM and sell on their store.

You can download them to your computer, but it is stored as a.vbk file. Someone made extractors that strip the DRM off of pdfbooks or epubbooks, but he went away years ago and never released any tools to crack the other two formats. I've been trying but it's my first try at something like this. I've done easy stuff but never tried to break DRM off of a book before. It is a tough first challenge as the format can be a little different depending on the book. Some are a single jpg/pdf of each page, others are text and a folder with jpg's.
